The Benefits of Stretching the Feet

General health is often improved by stretching and exercising your feet on a routine basis.  While walking may be the most beneficial exercise, flexibility and resistance exercises can be just as important in promoting good health and avoiding injury to the feet.  There are many forms of exercise to choose from, many of which can be integrated into your daily routine.  Before beginning, it’s important to allow time for simple stretching; this can help in strengthening the muscles of the feet.  Some exercises may include circling your foot in one direction, then changing to the other direction.  Dropping the heel while standing on a step is another effective stretch for the feet. It's important to remember to contact your podiatrist if you experience pain at any time during these stretches.

Stretching the feet is a great way to prevent injuries. If you have any concerns with your feet consult with Imaze Marian Davis, DPM from Marian Davis, DPM, PA. Our doctors will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

Stretching the Feet

Being the backbone of the body, the feet carry your entire weight and can easily become overexerted, causing cramps and pain. As with any body part, stretching your feet can serve many benefits. From increasing flexibility to even providing some pain relief, be sure to give your feet a stretch from time to time. This is especially important for athletes or anyone performing aerobic exercises, but anyone experiencing foot pain or is on their feet constantly should also engage in this practice.

Great ways to stretch your feet:

  • Crossing one leg over the others and carefully pull your toes back. Do 10-20 repetitions and repeat the process for each foot
  • Face a wall with your arms out and hands flat against the wall. Step back with one foot and keep it flat on the floor while moving the other leg forward. Lean towards the wall until you feel a stretch. Hold for 30 seconds and perform 10 repetitions for each foot
  • Be sure not to overextend or push your limbs too hard or you could risk pulling or straining your muscle

Individuals who tend to their feet by regular stretching every day should be able to minimize foot pain and prevent new problems from arising.

How Can I Treat My Broken Foot?

If severe pain is experienced from a fall involving your foot, it is possible that there may be a fracture involving one or more bones. Symptoms often include increasing foot pain when standing or walking is attempted, in addition to swelling, bruising, and numbness in the toes or feet. There are a few different ways to diagnosis a foot fracture, one of which is having an x-ray taken. Cat scans and MRI’s can be additional tests that may be required, depending on the severity and location of the break. Treatment may include pain medicine and antibiotics, and if there are cuts on the skin, a tetanus shot may be suggested. Surgery may be an additional option depending on numerous factors. Resting and avoiding activities which may cause foot pain is recommended, in addition to elevating the foot and attempting to reduce possible swelling.

A broken foot requires immediate medical attention and treatment. If you need your feet checked, contact Imaze Marian Davis, DPM from Marian Davis, DPM, PA. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

  • Bruising
  • Pain
  • Redness
  • Swelling
  • Blue in color
  • Numbness

Those that suspect they have a broken foot shoot seek urgent medical attention where a medical professional could diagnose the severity.

Treatment for broken bones varies depending on the cause, severity and location. Some will require the use of splints, casts or crutches while others could even involve surgery to repair the broken bones. Personal care includes the use of ice and keeping the foot stabilized and elevated.

How Heel Spurs Can Feel Better

A growth on the heel that appears to have a bony texture is commonly known as a heel spur. Pain and tenderness often occur mainly because of the weight placed on the heel while walking. Obesity, poor walking and running habits, and possible hereditary conditions may be common causes of this condition, in addition to repetitive trauma inflicted on the heel. There are a few treatment options, and a crucial one is to rest the foot. Cold therapy may be another beneficial way to treat heel spurs, along with anti-inflammatory medicine. It’s important to keep the foot and ankle strong by performing specific stretches that aid in retaining mobility. An effective exercise that will help to stretch the bottom of the foot is done by pulling up on the toes and feet with your hands, then holding this position for 30 seconds. This is a beneficial treatment when repeated regularly, although it may be painful at first to perform. If you think you may have a heel spur, please consult with a podiatrist for a proper diagnosis.

Heel spurs can be incredibly painful and sometimes may make you unable to participate in physical activities. To get medical care for your heel spurs, contact Imaze Marian Davis, DPM from Marian Davis, DPM, PA. Our doctors will do everything possible to treat your condition.

Heels Spurs

Heel spurs are formed by calcium deposits on the back of the foot where the heel is. This can also be caused by small fragments of bone breaking off one section of the foot, attaching onto the back of the foot. Heel spurs can also be bone growth on the back of the foot and may grow in the direction of the arch of the foot.

Older individuals usually suffer from heel spurs and pain sometimes intensifies with age. One of the main condition's spurs are related to is plantar fasciitis.

Pain

The pain associated with spurs is often because of weight placed on the feet. When someone is walking, their entire weight is concentrated on the feet. Bone spurs then have the tendency to affect other bones and tissues around the foot. As the pain continues, the feet will become tender and sensitive over time.

Treatments

There are many ways to treat heel spurs. If one is suffering from heel spurs in conjunction with pain, there are several methods for healing. Medication, surgery, and herbal care are some options.
